Appointments are required for ultrasound, CT Scans, CONE BEAM and BMD. General X-Rays do not require an appointment.

The following preparations were written with adults in mind. For children or patients who feel they may not be able to cope with the particular preparations required, please contact our staff. Previous history of any allergic reaction with Intravenous Contrast Medium should be reported to our staff (importantly, radiographers) when making your appointment. Medication to reduce the risk of a Contrast Medium reaction may be required & can be arranged by our staff.

Ultrasound Preparations

General Ultrasounds

Give extra 10 for trainees.

  • 8–16 yr ⇒ 6 hours

Abdomen + Elastography 40

Please do not smoke during this period. Take normal medications with a sip of water – no milk or soft drinks.

Renal Arteries 40

Fast from food for 8 hrs prior to appointment

Doppler Studies for

Pelvis 30
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before
  • Drink 800ml, finish 1 hr before, hold until after appointment
  • 12–18 years ⇒ 800ml
  • 3–11 years ⇒ 400ml
  • < 4 yrs ⇒ Make sure child is well hydrated
Renal, KUB, Prostate
(these are all the same scan)

Follicle Tracking / Scanning

Abdomen: Fast for 6 hours. Please do not smoke during this period. Take normal medications with a sip of water – no milk or soft drinks.

Pelvis: It is important that you have a full bladder at the time of the examination. 1hr 30mins before the appointment and then drink 1 litre of clear fluid over the next hour. Do not empty your bladder until after the ultrasound examination.

Renal: Fast for 6 hours before the appointment. A full bladder will be required. 1hr 30mins prior to the appointment and then drink 1 litre of clear fluid over the next hour. Do not empty your bladder until after the ultrasound examination.

Obstetric Ultrasound (up to 25 weeks): A full bladder will be required. 1hr 30mins prior to the appointment time, then drink 1 litre of clear fluid over the next hour.

Obstetric Ultrasound (more than 25 weeks): Drink 3–4 glasses of clear fluid from 1 hour before your appointment.

Breast, Thyroid, Scrotal, Leg Veins or Duplex Carotid Ultrasound: No preparation is required.

Renal arteries or Abdominal Aorta Doppler: Fast for 6 hours prior to the examination, with no smoking during this time.

Liver Elastography: Fast for 6 hours, no alcohol for 24 hours; preferable morning appointments.

CT Scan Preparations

CT Abdomen, CT Pelvis, CT Chest, CT Head, CT Soft Tissue Neck or CT Angiography:

Fast for 4 hours. It is important to remain hydrated. Please advise our staff if you are diabetic, asthmatic, or have any allergies. Please drink two glasses of water in the hour before your appointment.
